Year 1 Students Travel Back in Time at Buckingham House

A Day of Discovery and Hands-On Learning in a Historic Cottage and School House

We are excited to share the wonderful experiences our Year 1 students recently had during their visit to Buckingham House, a historic cottage built between 1880 and 1890 by pastoralist John Buckingham. This charming four-room limestone and iron cottage provided the perfect backdrop for our Year 1 students to step back in time and discover life in the olden days.

During their visit, students had the opportunity to explore how families lived in the cottage, delve into the dairy and farming equipment used onsite, and learn about the fascinating history of dairying in our city. The interactive nature of the visit engaged our students and enhanced their understanding of the past.

The adventure didn’t stop there! Our students also had a memorable experience inside the Old Wanneroo School House, which opened in 1899. Here, they got a firsthand look at what education was like in a time when blackboards were standard, and dunce hats were a form of discipline.

The Year 1 students thoroughly enjoyed their “blast from the past”, discovering the daily life before electricity. They immersed themselves in activities like wood stove cooking, sewing, and washing.

Thank you to the Buckingham House and their dedicated volunteers for this unforgettable “time warp”. While our students enjoyed their journey into the past, we are certain they left with a newfound appreciation for the conveniences of present-day life!
